1.5 million PPV buys & counting for Triller Fight Club
Snoop Dogg, Justin Bieber, Pete Davidson, Mario Lopez, Ice Cube, Major Lazer, The Black Keys, and many more celebrities, musicians, and personalities. This was not the Grammy’s, it was a boxing event… and it took over social media.
Triller Fight Club introduced themselves with a massive attention grabbing event on Saturday night that featured a crossover boxing match between internet star Jake Paul and former UFC fighter Ben Askren.
In the combat sports world the event became polarizing with many traditionalists not being a fan of the Triller setup and structure as it distanced itself from the norm seen at standard “fight nights”.
However, this distaste harboured by a some fight fans seemed to have no negative impact on PPV sales as headliner Jake Paul claims there was 1.5 million buys and $75m USD generated. With that number likely to increase as the final tally comes in from various digital partners.
SB Nation’s The Bad Left Hook also reported similar numbers and stated the PPV could top an incredible 2 million buys. To put that in perspective Poirier vs. McGregor 2 had a reported 1.6 million in sales in January of this year.
For his first round knockout Paul walked away with $690,000 (and likely a percentage of PPV) and Askren received the biggest payday of his fighting career with $500,000. You can read the full fight purses here.
Another impressive number for Triller Fight Night was how it performed against the WWE’s marquee event of the year - WrestleMania. Dave Meltzer reported on fight night that Triller had 5.2 million searches online compared to WrestleMania’s 750,000 searches across two night of their event in Tampa, Florida earlier this month.
Triller returns on June 5th with a heavyweight boxing match between the legendary Evander Holyfield and Ireland’s Kevin McBride, the last man to beat Mike Tyson.
